How To Get To Melbourne Zoo

Melbourne Zoo is conveniently located within walking distance of several tram stops. Located in Carlton at Royal Gardens, public transport is the easiest and the most eco-friendly way to get there! Trains run from Flinders Street Station to Melbourne Zoo daily on the Upfield line. Jump off at Royal Park Station - located just across the road from Melbourne Zoo's rail gate entrance. Trams are also a super convenient option - just hop on Route 58 from William St in the city centre and disembark at Melbourne Zoo (Stop 26).

How Big is Melbourne Zoo?

Said to be modelled after London Zoo, Melbourne Zoo is Australia's oldest zoo and occupies 55-acre (22 ha) of land. Although the zoo itself dates back to 1852, it was the appointment of Albert Alexander Cochrane Le Souef in 1870 that saw the site evolve into the renowned Melbourne Zoo we know and love. Le Souef believed that more exotic animals should be procured for public display and enjoyment, starting a legacy of education and conservation that continues to today.

What Animals are at the Melbourne Zoo?

Melbourne Zoo is roughly arranged into areas reflecting different regions and climates around the globe. Major zones in the zoo include the Australian Outback (naturally!), Asian rainforest, African rainforest, an Orangutan sanctuary, a reptile house, a butterfly house and a huge zone home to six rambunctious elephants! Species on display at the zoo include lions, giraffes, monkeys, Snow leopards, Sumatran tigers and Tasmanian devils. As one of the oldest continually operating city zoos of its kind, some of the resident animals have fascinating histories in their own right. A crowd favourite is Bong Su, an Asian elephant gifted to the zoo in 1997 by the Sultan of Pahang in Malaysia. With a wide range of species on display from all corners of the earth, everyone in the family can find their favourite animal at Melbourne Zoo!

How Far is Werribee Zoo from Melbourne?

Werribee Open Range Zoo is just 30 minutes from Melbourne CBD en route to Victoria's world-renowned Great Ocean Road! Despite being just a half an hour's drive from Melbourne, Werribee Zoo is a highly immersive experience modelled after the plains of the sub-sahara. With the rolling expanses and seemingly endless enclosures, you’ll swear you’ve been transported to the horn of Africa all without leaving Melbourne!
