Overview

Start Crewing: this is the exciting start of the journey into keelboat sailing.

No experience? No problem, the first step is a weekend course. Start Crewing to familiarise yourself with the vessel and the responsibilities associated with being a crew member.

Your experienced Instructor will introduce you to the basics of sailing on a small boat, including boat handling, safety and sailing theory. You will cover basic sailing terminology and rules, basic knots, tacking and gybing and man overboard recovery.

Start Helming: Already completed Start Crewing? Great, the next step in the Australian Sailing pathway is Start Helming. The Start Helming course is designed to develop both your theory and practical skills to be able to confidently take control of the helm. Throughout this course we will cover preparation of the boat, helming, trim on all points of sail and recovery of man overboard whilst at the helm. It's the ideal introduction to the basics of steering a boat and will equip you with the key responsibilities of being a helmsman.

What's included?

12 hours Course, consisting of 2 x 6-hour lessons
Instructors that are qualified by Australian Sailing with years of experience
We will provide life jackets, don't forget to bring sun safe clothing, sun cream, wear non-marking shoes and a bottle of water

NOTE: Both courses are 12 hours, consisting of 2 x 6 hour lessons over the duration of a weekend 9am-3pm.

Always a lovely walk but today it was too muddy in patches, so we walked on the road.

Went for walk along Manly beach as far as yacht club. Lots of activity especially for young sailors. One of the safest areas of sea to learn,. Bonus of ice-cream vendor there too.

Weather: Sailing is an outdoor activity and weather is a factor that needs to be considered. Rain is not a reason to cancel a session. Sessions/courses will go ahead unless the Instructor decides not to proceed for safety reasons. In the case of a course, the instructor may alter the schedule and decide to run a theory session or for a session/course to be rescheduled to the next suitable opportunity for Manly Sailing and participants.
Alcohol Consumption: Manly Sailing does not supply alcohol but guests are welcome to bring their own. However Manly Sailing supports the responsible consumption of alcohol and reserves the right to refuse to carry any guest who is intoxicated. Manly Sailing also reserves the right to end a trip prematurely and return guests to shore should they cause concern for their safety and the safety of others.

Cancellation Policy

You may reschedule your session/course, free of charge - 7 days or more before the session/course date. After this point, we will likely have confirmed other participants and instructors.
We reserve the right to charge a rescheduling fee of $100 per person if you choose to reschedule less than 7 days before the session/course date.
For children’s term time classes, if they are not able to attend a lesson you must notify us at least 24 hours before the start of the lesson or that lesson will be forfeited. Although we cannot guarantee it, if given sufficient notice, we will attempt to reschedule your child into a different session.
