Hello! We are Fraser Island Boat Charters
About

Welcome to Fraser Island Boat Charters, where you can hire a boat and explore the waters of Hervey Bay and Fraser Island. If we’re passionate about one thing it’s how incredible our backyard, the Fraser Coast, is. Our fleet is based in Hervey Bay – home to calm seas (protected by the one and only Fraser Island). Hervey Bay is also known as the best place in the world to catch a glimpse of the Humpback Whales as they stop along their annual migration.

We recently had a great 4 nights away on K'Gari Breeze - the boat accommodated 7 of us comfortably and did everything we needed it to do. Scott and his team were very helpful throughout the trip with advice on anchorages, tides and weather conditions. Fraser Island Boat Charters have managed to strike a good balance between providing enough information and support, whilst also allowing their customers to be independent and free to enjoy the trip without interference. Highly recommended and will use again.

We had a wonderful 4 night stay on the Indigo catamaran with our 2 children (8 and 3!) we had never done anything like this before! The boat was very well laid out with everything we could need- very comfortable for the 4 of us. Scott and Mal were so comforting and reassuring for us novices and literally on call for our entire stay to help us problem solve and few rookie errors! We’d definitely recommend hiring through these guys! Highlights included beautiful sunsets every day, dingo footprint spotting on K’gari and the lighthouse walk on big woody island. Memories to last a lifetime and some good boating tales to tell the mates back home ;)

First time I took the family on a self-skippered charter for 3 nights. Indigo is a nice boat and perfectly suited for a family of 4 or 5. The boat was clean, well equipped and provided enough space for everyone (although the engine power was a bit at the lower end). Thanks to the solar panels and wind generator the batteries were always sufficiently loaded (no need to run the engines in the evening to re-charge the batteries). Scott was always friendly and showed us all that we needed to know about the boat so that we felt comfortable sailing on our own (I was the only one in our party with previous experience). He also offered us some flexibility with our charter dates and times that allowed us to maximise our sailing time. Everyone had a great time and we are already looking forward to try and do another sail in the future with more time to explore all the great spots along Fraser Island.

We had a great time. Hervey Bay and K'Gari provide a delightful setting for a live on-board boat trip. The island protects the bay from the prevailing winds and moorings near the beaches on the west side of the island are plentiful. We had just two couples aboard Alida for four nights, so it was very spacious and comfortable with its four cabins and two bathrooms. The weather was kind to us, with only a few light showers, and the largest waves were those from the wake of larger boats passing. We spent most of the day on the back deck, never needing to retreat to the saloon. The operator takes the boat in and out of the harbour and you always moor offshore, so you never need to berth at a jetty etc. For someone with power boat experience, motoring seemed straightforward, though with attention needed to depth in some areas. (If your experience is with outboards, don't expect much steerage in reverse). Pay attention to the briefing and videos on operation of anchor up/down and engine on/off as they are not obvious. Sailing was interesting. We would not recommend it to anyone with no sailing experience, other than perhaps sailing downwind with the headsail only. The mainsail was hard work to raise. The halyard tends to twist around itself when raising the sail. Once we had trouble lowering it because the halyard got so twisted and bunched between the top of the sail and the pulley at the top of the mast. We had to be a bit inventive to get it down. When tacking, the headsail sheets frequently got tangled around the gear on the front of the mast; the headsail then flapped about with its sheets whipping. Unless you have experience sailing a large catamaran, you might want to avoid sailing into the wind. Our impression was that Alida is not sailed very often - as well as all the gear lashed in the path of the headsail sheets, several pins came adrift from shackles and cleats. With only four people, the tender only needed to make one trip to shore and back each time we visited the island. Be careful getting in as there are various objects on the floor to fall on. We had a bit of trouble getting the outboard started. What seemed to help was: when priming, give it two squeezes only; and if it fires once then stops with the choke out, push the choke in and turn the throttle up for the next pull. The kitchen is more than adequate and there is a barbecue at the back of the boat. Fridge and freezer space is good, with a second (car style) fridge and large ice box as well. We suggest bringing your other food in a plastic crate or similar as there is not much free cupboard space. We took a bucket, paper towels and bin bags, all of which proved necessary. The Internet service is StarLink; be sure to get the wifi password at your briefing so that you can access weather reports. We found that even Telstra mobile phone signal was patchy once away from port. Communication with the operator is usually via SMS so you will definitely need a phone with Telstra service. In summary, we had a great time. Motoring was slow but straightforward, whereas sailing was more challenging. We had relatively few people on board, so can't comment on what Alida is like with a full passenger load.

I recently went on ‘Dream On’ for a quick 3 night getaway and had a really lovely time with the family. Chartering such a large vessel seemed daunting at first, but the wealth of information and instruction on the day of boarding made it so much easier to relax and enjoy our time on board. Thanks heaps to Scott & Steph for providing such a great experience from booking to departure. The Cat was quite spacious and well-maintained and suited our family of 5 really well. I was notably impressed by the clean white linen and beds being made similarly to a fancy hotel room. The extra nic nacs such as pegs, insect repellent and tomato sauce came in handy when we realised we didn’t bring them with us – it’s like they had thought of everything. (Not forgetting the onboard coffee machine.) If you are interested in actually sailing and don’t have any experience, I would highly recommend an RYA Introduction to Sailing or Start Yachting course before you go. It will make it so much easier and you will have a lot more fun knowing what you are supposed to be doing. (It’s not essential you sail though as you can motor along just as well.) I would highly recommend taking some snorkelling gear (that we forgot) and fishing gear. We had fun fishing and venturing ashore but with the water so clear we would have loved to enjoy some snorkelling as well. The sunsets are amazing! Overall, a great experience and one that I will be sure to do again.
