The VO2 max test is the criterion method for assessing cardiorespiratory fitness. The test is widely
used in the Australian academies and institutes of sport. VO2 max describes the highest rate at which energy is provided via aerobic metabolism. This is dependent on two main factors: 1. The capacity of the pulmonary, cardiac, vascular, and cellular mechanisms to consume and transport oxygen to the aerobic machinery within the muscles. 2. The capacity to diffuse oxygen from the vascular space and then for it to be utilized within the working muscles. The test will provide you with training zones. These measures can be discussed with your coaching team in an effort to optimize your training program. Additionally, you will obtain threshold limits. Knowing your anaerobic threshold is useful as it can provide a quantifiable intensity, whereby you can recognize that intensities greater than the threshold will be unsustainable.
What to expect
When you arrive, you are required to complete the APSS form and enter your personal details into the system. This will include both your weight and height, which can be measured on arrival. You will be orientated on the test, and terminology such as Rate of Perceived exertion (RPE) will be explained. You will perform a warmup, including any stretching routines you would normally include before the competition. During this time, the machine will be calibrated, optimizing the efficiency and accuracy f the test. Fitting of the mask and system will then occur, ready for the test to begin. Irrespective of the ergometer utilized, testing will begin at low intensity and slowly progress through to the point of exhaustion. It is important that you inform O2TESST of your training history and previous time trial results, so an appropriate protocol can be implemented. Should you have requested blood lactate testing, samples will be taken at every level of the test. Usually, this can be accomplished with only one wound, but if blood flow is poor, several injuries may be required. Blood pressure will be taken routinely during the test. This is to ensure no absolute/relative contraindications to continuing the exercise test have occurred.
Post-test
At the conclusion of your test, you will be encouraged to have a cooldown. The facemask and any contaminated material will either be sanitized or disposed of during this time. Please note – the test does not include a training program optimization. Instead, a trial is a tool that either you or your coach utilize in this pursuit. If you would like this, please let O2TESST know, as it can be discussed as a separate service.
