History and drinking have always gone hand-in-hand in Sydney, and The Rocks are where it all began. While some convicts brewed beer in secret, their jailers rolled in rum by the shipload. With 65 000 litres arriving on the First Fleet alone. In the fledgling, port-side convict colony of Sydney, it wasn’t long before hard liquor became standard currency, and no good story started without it.
Part tour and part sunset swagger, Rum, Rascals & The Rocks will bring to life Sydney’s notorious history of Escapes, Murders, Robberies, Piracies, Rum-Runners, Push Gangs, Opium Dens, Gambling Haunts & Pleasure Houses as we indulge ourselves with some of the best cocktails and the best venues in Sydney.
Venues:
1. THE GLENMORE COCKTAIL LOUNGE
The Glenmore in The Rocks has been an Aussie icon since 1921, boasting one of the best rooftop bars in the city with stellar views of Sydney Harbour. Tucked away on the middle level is its classic 1920s Hollywood- inspired cocktail bar. Full of style and sophistication, this is where we will begin our evening of rum-riddled tales.
2. THE DOSS HOUSE
Recapturing the convivial spirit of Sydney’s formative years, The Doss House unites fine whiskies, spirits & cocktails with the historical charm of one of the city’s oldest suburbs, The Rocks. Built in the 1840s, this space has been the home to a rich, eclectic collection of tenants, including a bootmaker, boarding house, doctor’s surgery & opium dealer.
3. SERGEANT LOK
Sergeant Lok is a modern Chinese dining and drinking destination in the heritage-listed, old No.4 Police Station building at The Rocks, Sydney. Welcome to a world of secret handshakes, underground gambling and opium dens. A time where the underworld ruled and police were paid to look the other way.
Three premium rum-based cocktails. * Our recommended rum cocktails can be exchanged for other cocktails/spirits or bar drinks, but they must be of equal or lesser value.

a week agoWe just enjoyed our second Journey Walks tour with Max, we have done Sydney's Convict Colony around the Quay & The Rocks and Once Upon a Crime in Paddington. They were both outstanding, the first was a gift voucher from our daughter - she knew we'd love it and we did indeed! So the second was a must and there'll be more! We have both lived in Sydney all our lives but there is so much you don't notice or see or even know about the exciting and fascinating stories that Max shares with such brilliance and passion. These tours are so in depth and a must for locals or tourists to learn so much about our beautiful city. I believe school kids should do the convict tour mainly for their general knowledge about what really happened! Planning our next "walk" soon! You have to do it!

3 weeks agoThe convicts tour was one of my highlights of my entire time travelling the East Coast. The tour guide was very enthusiastic and you can tell he has such a depth oh knowledge and passion for the history he was guiding us through. Thoroughly enjoyed. Support local small businesses and book with them as opposed to booking a generic tour with a big company, it’s so worth it :)

4 months agoHad the most amazing time on the Rum and Rascals walking tour of The Rocks. This is the second tour we have done with Max and it was great fun. If you want to learn something new about Sydney or visit a few hidden gems in The Rocks this is the tour for you. Already looking forward to our next tour with Max.

3 months agoI loved the Sydney Convict Colony tour. Our tour guide Beck gave us a great overview of the history of the area and I learned a lot in only a few hours. Beck was very knowledgeable about the area, gave good local recommendations, and was conscientious about our comfort and our tour experience given the very hot temperatures that day. I would recommend Journey Walks and would love to try another one of their tours on another visit to Sydney.

6 months agoI joined Journey Walks for the Convict Colony History of the Rocks tour on 26 August led by Max. It was AMAZING! My partner and I really enjoyed it, such fascinating history brought to life wonderfully by Max. Do not hesitate to book with Journey Walks. We wish we’d booked another tour, but we’ll be back! Very interesting, easy walk, excellent value for money.
