  • Overview

Learn bush navigation in the Blue Mountains.

Essential for anyone who wants to explore by map and compass and go beyond the beaten track.

Becoming lost is not an option for bushwalkers, backcountry skiers and snowboarders. Correct navigation can take you safely over any terrain and can save lives.

  • What's included?

We begin with the ancient art of navigation by the sun, moon and stars. Then we familiarise ourselves with compass and map skills before putting our knowledge into practice.

It all happens step by step for complete understanding, guided by our experienced instructors. Among other things, you will learn how to take bearings and locate your position on a map, navigate through fog and thick undergrowth, understand altimeters and GPS navigation systems and, most importantly, how not to get lost!

This course will make you a confident bush navigator no matter where you go!

  • Location

    Meeting Point:
At our office located inside the Blue Mountains YHA, 207 Katoomba Street, Katoomba 2780, only a 5-minute walk from Katoomba train station. Free all-day parking around the back of the hostel.

Bucket list experience! So glad I took the day to do this adventure. Our guides were super polite and kept us safe while answering questions and sharing fun facts. They made sure we were all capable and having a great time. Highly recommend this if you've been thinking about it.

Fantastic people. Brian was an exceptional guide and a lot of fun to hang with. I was lucky when I booked the combined abseiling and canyoning in that no one else had booked the second half, and I ended up with a private experience. Not only that, we had the canyon to ourselves as well. Not to be missed if you’re in Katoomba!

We had an incredible experience canyoning and abseiling with high and wild. The guides made everyone feel safe and comfortable, and their knowledge about wildlife and fauna was incredible. It is a must do in the Blue Mountains! Empress falls and canyons were incredible. I will certainly be back for more!

We had an epic day exploring the Empress Falls with Brian and Mika. Our guides were informative, made it very fun, and always ensured we were safe. Canyoning is such a great way to get into nature and highly recommend the High & Wild team!

It was one of the greatest challenges I had. I'm so glad that I could do it with you guys. I'm afraid of heights, so I pick up the abseiling as a personal challenge. Tim and Zoltan were legends! Super helpful and patient, I had an amazing time in the morning. At the afternoon with the Canyoning I felt so alive and glad that I could accomplish that and face my fear! The Abseiling at the waterfall is stunning! I felt in love with that canyon and with the Blue Mountains there! Really, thank you for everything!

      General Clothing to Wear:
Dress for the weather, wear running or hiking shoes and bring a water bottle and camera. For canyoning, bring running shoes that can get wet, a swimsuit and a waterproof camera. If you don’t have one we supply a waterproof camera free of charge. We also have helmets fitted with GoPro mounts.

Clothing to Wear for Winter Canyoning:
With winter canyoning you need to wear old running shoes (they may get wet and muddy). Thick socks, ideally wool if you have them. Leggings and shorts or quick-drying long pants and shorts. On top, you want to have at least 4 layers, singlet, t-shirt, fleece and a jacket of some description. Bring 1.5 liters of water. We will provide backpacks and all the technical equipment you require.

      Age Limit:
We have had people from 6 to 86 participate in our adventures. Generally, we have a minimum age of 14 years for summer canyoning trips. If you have kids under this age, please contact us to see if the canyon would be suitable.

      Weather-Dependant:
We still run abseiling, canyoning, and survival courses in light rain. We do need fine weather for rock climbing. Please note that when poor weather is forecast we still decide if the trip is running that morning. This is simply because the forecasts are often wrong.
  • We understand that sometimes things change. If you give us 48 hours’ notice there is no charge. For bush survival and group bookings, we require 14 days’ notice.
