The O’Keefe Rail Trail cycling tour from Axedale takes you through majestic native forests, rich farmland, picturesque waterways to Heathcote, and return. A fabulous day, and once you've done it, you'll likely want to do it again! A ride along this trail is a great day out for individuals, couples, friends and families.
Forged over a century ago by Victoria’s rail pioneers, the Rail Trail is named after Andrew O’Keefe, a Bendigo rail pioneer.
Cycle from Axedale to Heathcote and enjoy a picnic lunch or purchase lunch from one of Heathcote's cafes or bakeries. There's plenty of choices!
Heathcote boasts the longest main street of any country Australian town, as well as over 30 cellar doors in the region which is renowned for its award-winning shiraz and the famous red Cambrian soils.
This trip is 27 kms each way. A moderate level of fitness is recommended due to the duration and distance travelled.
This tour commences at 10.30 am at Axedale (15 mins from Bendigo and less than 1 hour from Echuca). Ride a comfortable 27.5 kms to Heathcote. Arrive back in Axedale between 4pm and 5pm.

a year agoWhat a lovely place to visit with the kids! The street walk to the Discovery Centre from where we parked our car was beautiful. It reminded me of Sovereign Hill. When you get inside there is a lot to see and do. Make sure you walk around and see all of it as some parts can easily be missed. There is an indoor museum, and very large outdoor section. Entry is free. If you want to ride on the paddle boats there is a charge, however there is one on display on the river you can walk on as shown in the photos.

8 months agoPort of Echuca is a must visit place in Australia. It offers lots of history and is action packed for fun, for all ages. Whether you wish to indulge in local history and stroll through the nearby port of Echuca museum or hop in to a stagecoach ride, or take a paddlesteamer ride... there's plenty of action for everyone over here. We visit Echuca few times a year and have enjoyed all these fun activities many times. Parking can be tight though during long weekends, public holidays etc. Highly recommended.

7 months agoA must do if your in Echuca. Plenty of things to see and do for the family to look at and the museum also is interactive so it was great with the kids. You dont need to pay to look around which makes it even better. You may want to book your steamboat cruise in advance as they can be sold out very quickly.

a year agoGreat place to spend your day. Our family (2 adults and 2 kids) availed the Heritage Package (costs $171) which includes 1 hour paddle steamboat ride, guided port tour, entry to historical museum, Great Australian beer shed and holden museum. We have hesitation to avail the guided tour at first. Were glad we decided to go for it. It was fun, informative and refreshing. Our guide tour, Jenny, is a legend! It’s our honour to have met her. We suggest to do the paddle steamboat ride. It’s wonderful to explore the length of Murray river while drinking beer/wine/coffee/soda (there’s a kiosk in the steamboat). The kiosk doesn’t sell hot foods only crisps and cookies. Kids will have opportunity as well to drive the steamboat. If you’re in a budget, the entry to the port is free. There is so much to do and explore. There’s an indoor play area at the top of the wooden dock. Kids can enjoy playing life size janga, bowling and playing music instruments while parents can recollect whilst savouring the scenic view. So, be sure to pack lunch and enjoy.

a year agoOver the years we have visited the Port of Echuca many times & always enjoyed our trip back in history. Today we visited mainly for a cruise on a paddle steamer. The river around the Port was busy & we really enjoyed our one hour cruise on the PS Alexander Arbuthnot just watching the world & scenery pass by.
